The New Vicar of Christ : Pope Francis

10:20 PM

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires has been elected as the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the first non-European in 1,272 years, the first from the Americas and the first-ever Jesuit pope.

The Argentinian Cardinal dressed in white vestments and a crucifix around his neck shrugged off the rain and cold air, shyly waved to the faithful upon his first appearance as a pope. He took the papal name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi who was a lover of the poor like himself. Here's a short biography of the new pope from the Vatican:

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J., Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ordinary for Eastern-rite faithful in Argentina who lack an Ordinary of their own rite, was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires. He was ordained for the Jesuits on December 13, 1969 during his theological studies at the Theological Faculty of San Miguel. He was novice master in San Miguel, where he also taught theology.
On May 20, 1992 he was appointed titular Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary of Buenos Aires, receiving episcopal consecration on June 27. On June 3, 1997 was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires and succeeded Cardinal Antonio Quarracino on February 28, 1998. He is also Ordinary for Eastern-rite faithful in Argentina who lack an Ordinary of their own rite.
He served as President of the Bishops' Conference of Argentina from November 2005 until November 2011.

Faithfuls around the globe hope for the best from the Pope, to be able to continue the ministry of Christ and truly serve as Jesus served His people. Countless news on the TV, internet and the social media have shown Cardinal Bergoglio's early life of humility and many were indeed inspired by this.

The new pope sympathizes to drug addicts and AIDS victims. As a Cardinal he showed compassion for the victims of HIV-AIDS victims; in 2001, he visited a hospice to kiss and wash the feet of 12 AIDS victims. The photo above is a screenshot from a Youtube video uploaded in 2008 where Cardinal Bergoglio was washing the feet of drug addicts in Buenos Aires.

A new era has begun - for the Catholics, non-Catholics, the believers and non-believers and for the whole world. Despite the issues against the new pope on gay marriage, abortion, euthanasia, I think it is worth a shot in seeing if Pope Francis will truly stand up to the vocation of being the Vicar of Christ here on Earth.

Let us pray for Pope Francis that God may grant him the strength, courage, knowledge and wisdom to truly fulfill his duty as the shepherd of the flock Jesus endowed on him. Unceasingly pray for each and everyone that the Holy Will of God may come to take place. Amen.

Viva Il Papa!
